Valerie K. Martin, CPA
Chief Financial Officer

Valerie Martin is the Chief Financial Officer of the John Templeton Foundation. In this role, she is responsible for maximizing the return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems and ensuring legal and regulatory compliance with governing documents and for all accounting and financial reporting functions. Mrs. Martin represents the Foundation on the board of the Foundation Financial Officers Group.

Mrs. Martin received her degree in Accounting (BSAC) from the University of Delaware and is a Certified Public Accountant in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Following graduation, she worked for approximately ten years with a regional public accounting firm in the Scranton-Wilkes Barre area, and was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants. During her tenure in public accounting, she participated in audits of nursing homes, home health agencies, homeowners associations, Blue Cross/Blue Shield federal employee programs for the federal government and various grant programs. She was responsible for the preparation of financial statements, loan proposals and estate, corporate and personal tax returns. Mrs. Martin acted as Senior Staff Accountant and Office Supervisor for a branch office in the Pocono region. Acting on behalf of the firm, she was member of the board of directors of the local chamber of commerce.

A native of both the Bryn Mawr and Berwyn-Paoli areas, she rejoined her family in the Philadelphia region in 1997 when she accepted a position with the Housing Authority of the County of Chester. She served for four years as a Senior Accountant, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of associated limited partnerships. Her responsibilities included nonprofit governmental grant administration, financial reporting, procurement and contract administration and budget preparation. She interacted with outside legal, investment and lending representatives.

Married with two children, her interests include travel, softball, skiing and spending time with her family. Mrs. Martin is the treasurer of Wheels of Wellness, treasurer of Let Freedom Ring, Inc. and a member and past treasurer of the Junior League of Philadelphia, Inc., a volunteer women’s organization formed as a public charity, which focuses on aiding women and children at risk in the Greater Philadelphia area.
