Many projects highlighted in this summary are larger-scale strategic initiatives or major topical research support RFPs, but the Foundation is also interested in supporting solid, in-depth research by individual scholars in a wide range of fields. In the humanities, especially, the model is often a request for time off to write a book. The monograph and peer-reviewed article are the backbone of scholarship in these fields, but the Foundation also encourages efforts to increase the impact of the work, such as popular level versions for wide-circulation periodicals. All of these scholars have something significant to say and if they want to contribute to human understanding, getting their ideas widely disseminated is important. The following is a sampling of recent grants to individual scholars.
