In keeping with Sir John Templeton’s belief in the power of genius to benefit humanity, the Foundation is committed to identifying and nurturing young people who are especially gifted in mathematics and science. In the United States, the key method for meeting their special needs has been acceleration, the advancement of gifted students to grades above their age-group peers. The 2004 Templeton Foundation report, A Nation Deceived: How Schools Hold Back America’s Brightest Students, stimulated a lively national dialogue on this subject that has affected our educational system at every level. The Foundation continues to support cutting-edge research on the needs of gifted students and on strategies for identifying and encouraging their talents.
